How to Make a Cuban Espresso at Home

A cuban espresso (also known as Cuban Coffee) is a traditional Cuban espresso drink, which is sweetened with brown sugar while the coffee is brewed. It is a prominent drink in Cuban cafes and also at various social events among Cubans. If prepared properly, it creates an attractive looking drink with a light brown foam layer.

The use of brown sugar also add a uniquely rich sweetness to the drink, separating it from other types of strongly-brewed coffees. In Cuba it’s rarely consumed with milk, as most of the time these cafecitos are purchased on an as-needed basis from small street stalls set up each morning for that very purpose. Because milk can spoil in the strong Cuban heat, it’s rarely on offer, though it’s common to add to Cuban coffee prepared at home, turning it into a sweetened cafĂ© con leche.
