Originating in Turin, Italy, Bicerin is a sweet and creamy coffee drink that combines espresso, drinking chocolate, and whipped milk. The word “bicerin” means “little glass” in Italian. Thus, this drink is served in a small glass that combines small amounts of each of the ingredients.

  • 1 1/2 ounces freshly made espresso or strong coffee.
  • 1 1/2 ounces freshly made hot chocolate.
  • 1 1/2 ounces heavy cream (milk can be used as a lighter option)
  • Chocolate shavings for decoration (optional)

  1. Put a cocktail shaker into the freezer for at least 10 minutes. This will be used for the cream or milk.
  2. Make a shot of espresso or string coffee.
  3. Make hot chocolate. Homemade is best, but any hot chocolate will work.
  4. Pour hot chocolate into the bottom 1/3rd of the glass or mug.
  5. Pour espresso into the mug while slightly tilting the mug.
  6. Put heavy cream or milk into the cocktail shaker and shake until it thickens slightly (about 20 shakes).
  7. Pour cream or milk into the cup or mug while slightly tilting the cup.
  8. (optional) Top with chocolate shavings.

Pour into a thick-sided glass, ideally stemmed, with a volume of about a cup.

Tilting the cup while adding the ingredients will improve the layering of the different ingredients for presentation.
